Mr. Khan’s Review on Pari (2018)

A review on Pakistani Horror feature length film, Pari (2018). The Production Houses are MIG World Media USA and Screen Shots Productions while its Distributor is Filmica Pictures.

+ Crew

  • Written, Directed & Produced by Syed Atif Ali
  • Co-Written by Muhammad Ahsan
  • Cinematography by Akthar Nadeem
  • Edited by Ashar Baig
  • Co-Produced by Mobeen Mehmood

+ Note

Pari is shot at the most mesmerizing location of Ayyubia; Pakistan. This film is inspired by some of well-known English Horror films, such as The Shining (1980), Paranormal Activity (2007) and The Omen (1976). The evil reflection in this film had a solid resemblance of the evil nun character in the Hollywood Horror feature length film, The Conjuring (2016); although the director has strongly denied this to be his inspiration for the character. Coincidentally, just almost after a month a Bollywood Horror film is to be released on 2nd Mar 2018 by the same name with similar plot.

There is a scene in the film where legendary late actors Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif pictures are listed as Board of Directors of the hospital. I could understand to why he (director) may have done this for as it was intentional. In the fame English horror film, The Omen, Gregory Peck played the lead role in it. So his inclusion as in this film was an Easter egg actually and understandable. However as for Omar Sharif, he was simply included due to director’s admiration for the late actor which was irrelevant for this horror film.

Its music is composed by Masood Alam while the visual effects been conducted and supervised by SM Yahya, Muhammad Owais Mubbashir, Danish Raza and Azam. Its makeup is done by Saima Shah. There are some cameos in the film, which are performed by two of the NAPA actors.

There are some SPOILERS mentioned below!

+ Main Cast

  1. Junaid Akhtar as Shehram
  2. Azekha Daniyal as Mehwish
  3. Khushi Maheen as Pari
  4. Saleem Mairaj as Abdullah

xxxxxxx

+ Supportive Cast

  1. Qavi Khan as Professor Sahab
  2. Rasheed Naz as Imam
  3. Faiq Asim as Abdullah’s Son
  4. Owais Mubashir as Drug Addict (Cameo)
  5. Hammad Siddiqui as Hospital Receptionist (Cameo)

+ Plot

A young married couple with their only daughter shift to new home, isolated from the city have started to face some strange evil happenings and disturbances.

+ High Points

i – Saleem Mairaj as Abdullah has performed very well. He is a great actor and has always made his roles memorable in any project; mild performances by everyone else.

ii – Some songs in the film were okay, average at best.

iii – Good job on Makeup & hair styling. The special effects used in makeup looked really cool.

iv – The location to shoot a horror film was good, more suitable for the film’s content.

v – Stephen King’s novel Dead Rising was a direct hint given earlier in the film regarding the reason why evil happenings occurring around the protagonist’s family.

+ Low Points

i – It is exceptional to see no horror in a horror film. What we witness here was several attempted jump scares… attempted.

ii – Really terrible use of visual effects. It’s really a shame to amount of money was invested to make it look real. Such as, the snake climbing on a tree, self-evil reflections and the girl on wires… the list goes on.

iii – What was the link between the tree and Pari? Why Pari didn’t acted evil before entering the new house? What were Pari’s real intentions behind her evil acts? Was the house haunted by evil spirit or it was controlled by Pari from day one? (We know that the other spirit was not evil). Too many questions left unanswered.

iv – I am not sure if Qavi Khan’s performance to be labeled as good or bad. He is so scared from something following him late at night that even after banging loud on the door to open, he is more interested to tell 5 minutes long story of how he got this far at the door step than to enter the home first.

v – Really? Is it that easy to use a black magic book to raise the dead without any prior experience, knowledge? Cool! I am going to book one myself.

vi – The final conflict with the devil was child’s play to get rid of.

vii – Except for Saleem Mairaj’s role, all other supporting characters were weakly written.

viii – If I had that big scar on my arm or loved one’s then I would have visited the doctor right away.

ix – It is not necessary to live at such a house if all the strange things have started to happen ever since the very day shifted there. Safety always comes first.

+ Overall

Having Pakistani horror films released so rarely, Pari turns out to be another disappointment even for their die-hard fans.

+ High Points

i – Humayun Saeed acted very well in this film. His character is the most interestingly written and played out in its lead role.

ii – The multi-talented star, Vasay Chaudhry’s performance is surprisingly very good in this full comedy film. It is the first time that I watched Vasay to play a comic role. He would definitely make many fans after this film. Other Honorable Mentions: Hamza Ali Abbasi, Ahmad Ali Butt, Ayesha Khan, Sohai Ali Abro and Jawed Sheikh.

iii – The film’s parody of the action thriller film Waar’s opening sequence is shown in this comedy film Jawani Phir Nahi Aani plus the relationship of the main characters that is between Saif (Hamza Ali Abbasi) & Kubra (Ayesha Khan) are now played out as spouses instead of siblings, is a joke itself.

iv – The cinematography is fantastic and shot very smoothly.

v – The first half of the film reminded me as if I am watching Emran Hashmi’s film but in good light.

vi – The comedy of this film is very funny and hilarious including many of its hidden jokes are based on sex where only the wise people may able to understand them.

vii – Some of the songs are good to listen to, especially the end credits song and its video shoot ‘Jawani Phir Nahi Aani’.

viii – Praises to the makeup & hair styling dept, made the stars looked gorgeous on-screen.

ix – The costumes designing is commendable specifically the costume Humayun Saeed wears to play the gay character.

+ Low Points

i – The second half of the film could be easily shorten by 20 – 30 minutes as I felt the film is getting dragged unnecessarily.

ii – The first half of the film is much more enjoyable and funnier. The viewers would see the difference of the comic level after the intermission.

+ Overall

Jawani Phir Nahi Aani is a well-aimed, sex comedy film with full of satisfyingly hard laughs.

Mr. Khan’s Review on Gardish-e-Rung-e-Junoon (2017)

A review on Pakistani Drama theatre play, Gardish-e-Rung-e-Junoon (2017). It was performed at NAPA’s International Theatre Festival 2017.

+ Crew

  • Directed by Fraz Chhotanni
  • Written by Naz

+ Note
The system of injustice and the collision of the institutions of state with the media and elite of the country are the central focus of the play that seeks a change in this unjust system.

+ Full Cast

  1. Najma Kifayat as Nuura
  2. Owais Mubashir as Nazir
  3. Ashfaq Ahmed as Qadir
  4. Samhan Ghazi as Police Man
  5. Asma Noor as Sakeena
  6. Fraz Chhotani as Journalist
  7. Pashmina Aqeel as Bachi
  8. Muhammad Akhtar as Baray Molvi
  9. Akbar Islam as Sarpanj
  10. Uzma Sabeen as Bibi Ji
  11. Hasnain as Aadmi #1
  12. Farhan Malik as Aadmi #2
  13. Zuhair Zubair as Aadmi #3
  14. Tanveer Gill as Aadmi #4

+ Plot
It is about a mother who is seeking justice for her 10-year-old daughter who was raped by unknown culprit. After refusal for help by the station police and tribal judicial department, the mother tries to find the culprit on her own.

+ High Points
i – Najma Kifayat played her role splendidly as the victim’s mother, where on hard times she is struggling very badly to look for answers. It is good to see you in a different, mature and in a lead role.

ii – As I have always said that Owais Mubashir is a brilliant actor where he is easily adaptable in any role given to him. To play the role as antagonist, he went in depths of the character’s wants and diabolical schemes. Well done! Other Honorable Mentions: Ashfaq Ahmed, Fraz Chhotani and Akbar Islam.

+ Low Points
i – The play had too much shouting & screaming. I understand the sensitivity of the play’s topic and that the mother is now left alone in front of village that refuses to believe or even help her to investigate — even then the anguish of the protagonist where she sees her fate hopeless could be controlled with less screaming but more facial pain.

Her body movement could be shown as defeated, look surrounded by hallucinations or the unrest spirit of the victim asking for help… there are many things that could be done to reduce the number of times she shouts or scream. Otherwise, it makes the viewer very uncomfortable to sit & watch the play with already sensitive topic as main plot.

ii – The controls behind the play’s lighting was clumsy. An actor who is still giving his monologue yet the stage’s lights is switched off. The audience was left in pitch black darkness while the actor’s speech continued.

iii – The ending seemed like very a fairy tale one. I heard that the original ending was quite different but was it was refused to make the final cut. However, this ending was too unrealistic in the given situation.

+ Overall
Gardish-e-Rung-e-Junoon has many delicate, moving moments but falls short in capturing the audience hearts in the same way as this courageous story was meant to be.

Mr. Khan’s Review on Absolut Manto (2017)

A review on Pakistani Drama theatre play, Absolut Manto (2017). It was performed at NAPA’s International Theatre Festival 2017.

+ Crew

  • Directed by Kanwal Khoosat
  • Written by Saadat Hasan Manto

+ Note
Absolut Manto was supposed to be a Dastangoi play. However, it was conducted in the form of reading the stories to the audience.

+ Full Cast

  1. Sania Saeed
  2. Feryal Ali Gauhar
  3. Irfan Khoosat
  4. Sarmad Khoosat

+ Plot
Best known for his short stories, Saadat Hasan Manto chronicled the chaos that prevailed in society. Arguably the best Urdu short story writer and writer of realistic prose in South Asia, he was a maverick in a society that did not accept the bitter truths. His contribution to Urdu literature makes him a model for 21st century writers.

+ High Points
i – Well known and established TV stars are in the cast.

+ Low Points
i – I am sorry, what? Read? You say Read? In the entire play, you would read to the audience and you call that a performance? If the same task was given to the performers of NAPA / other theatre academy, they would have tell these stories in the shape of their characters… and without reading.

+ Overall
All that hype with inclusion of A-grade star cast, Absolut Manto turns out to be an epic failure.

+ Note

My Pure Land is an Urdu-language British drama film, directed by British Pakistani filmmaker, Sarmad Masud. It is based on a true story which focuses on Nazo Dharejo, a villager woman who fought bandits in the village of Qazi Ahmed Taluka, Sindh, Pakistan. It is told in a non-linear style where the three women faced with armed men led by her uncle who try to take her property forcibly from her.

The lead character of Nazo is played by a Pakistani dancer and TV award-winning actress, Suhaee Abro. She is the daughter of a famous Sindhi poet and activist, Attiya Dawood. Besides acting, Suhaee is a trained classical dancer. She has worked in many television plays, theater, documentaries and music videos.

My Pure Land casts a withering look at the patriarchal system of that nation and the corruption of the local authorities.

  2. Abdul Qadir as Driver

+ Plot

Three women defend their home against a group of armed men who want to take it forcibly from them.

+ High Points

i – The lead star, Suhaee Abro as Nazo has given a solid performance as a strong-headed woman who stands her ground with her family over a land dispute. Suhaee may perhaps be an unknown actress to the foreign market, but she has proven in a number of successful TV serials such as Sang-e-Mar Mar (2016) and Yakeen Ka Safar (2017) where she has not only acted brilliantly but also took up some daring roles too. Other Honorable Mentions: Syed Tanveer Hussain.

ii – The non-linear editing, helps the story to unfold gradually as the film progresses.

iii – There is some mild humor in the flashbacks to enjoy.

+ Low Points

i – Hardly any effort been made to make the story interesting. It’s pretty much, straight forward film with no sub plots.

ii – In a simple story, one tries to find great direction; which in this case is hard to come by.

iii – There is barely one or no song to listen to.

+ Overall

Even if, it is based on a true story, by skipping the addition of sub plots or the absence of having a strong romantic chemistry, My Pure Land happens to be a very dry film.

Kashif Hussain is one of the NAPA’s good actors and has performed in many successful hit plays. Some of them are, Ikhtiar (2017), Bye Mistake (2016), Ghosts (2019) and Proof (2017).

+ Full Cast

+ Plot

Zeeshan is frustrated with his medium-social life and daily routine 9 to 5’ job that he does to support himself along with his parents. One night, he accidentally comes across a stunning beauty and decides to act upon it.

+ High Points
i – This film’s real charm is its cinematography. Nabil Hasan has able to capture the film’s cold mood on multiple occasions.

ii – Most of the scenes are non-vocal, which is acceptable since the visual scenery itself was progressing the story.

iii – The production design is convincible as the locations that were used are suitable for the film’s atmosphere.

+ Low Points
i – The film length is too short to gain interest.

ii – Zeeshan’s decision to take our President’s favorite move was too soon. It didn’t give enough room for the viewers to understand and accept it.

+ Overall
Zeeshan is a light drama film of a man who is a prisoner of his own life.

Mr. Khan’s Review on Ghalthi (2016)

A review on Pakistani TV Drama Serial, Ghalthi (2016) aka Mistake. Its Production House is Cinematic Media Production while its Distributor is A-Plus TV.

+ Crew

  • Directed by Kaleem Rajput
  • Cinematography by Hassam Miraj and Adnan Khalid

  • Produced by Naveed Arshad & Musharaf Jaffery

+ Note
Ghalthi aired on A-Plus TV from 14th Jul 2016 – 07th Oct 2016. It consists of total 26 episodes. This serial was so popular that it used to air on A Plus twice in a week. Its opening theme by “Mery Mola Kia Meri Khatain Hian” is sung by Bushra Bilal.

+ Main Cast
1) Agha Ali as Saim
2) Sidra Batool as Saman
3) Sania Shamshad as Zara
4) Abid Ali as Ikhlaque Ahmed

xxxxxxx

+ Supportive Cast
5) Sajida Syed

6) Shehryar Zaidi

7) Lubna Aslam

8) Naila Jaffery

+ Plot
It centers around Saim who is in mutual love with his 1st cousin, Saman since childhood in secret.  His father Ikhlaque Ahmed is very strict and wants his son to marry of his choice only that is Zara (also 1st cousin of Saim). Before Saim is forced to marry Zara, he marries Saman first without informing anyone.

+ High Points
i – Sidra Batool as Saman performance was good while Abid Ali as Ikhlaque Ahmed performed really well.

ii – Addition of respected Arjumand Hussain was very good judgment, who performed very natural and interesting on-screen.

+ Low Points
i – The story gets interesting from 17th episode. Yes, you read it right… from seventeenth episode! Before that the story is almost the same in first sixteen (1 – 16) episodes. Now tell me, how is it possible for anyone to sit and wait for the drama to finally get interesting?

ii – The makeup artist of this drama series did a terrible job on the cast members.

iii – This is the first Pakistani TV drama series where almost every performer talk (voice over) to themselves first before finally making a stupid decision.

iv – In Pakistani dramas, the main gate of the house is always opened for anyone to walk in and see or hear what’s happening inside? Only where the shot with the character standing outside of the house is to be taken then only would you see the main gate to be locked.  In this drama series too, Ikhlaque Ahmed enters hears everything in secrecy to what his sister and brother in law are talking about of him.

v – If the protagonist had fallen in love with both heroines and had kids with them. After that only do he comes to know the bitter truth, would have made this drama series a very memorable one (highly controversial, yes) in Pakistani TV history.

+ Overall
Despite its (kind a) new premise, Ghalthi feels like a disjointed series of endless talks, rather than a sharp narrative, and ends up in a deep ditch.

+ Plot
After losing their infant due to miscarriage, there has been an uncomfortable atmosphere that is grown between the couple especially regarding to have a child. The husband fears for the survival of his community as many are killed on hate crimes. His desire for a child is concern and much needed for happiness in his married life.

However, his wife thinks otherwise.

+ High Points
i – Hajra Yamin as the fragile wife performed the protagonist role marvelously. Her role was the most difficult one to perform yet she did it better than the audience expectations.

ii – Hani Taha played her role very natural. Her performance was so realistic that it showed as if she was interacting with someone close to her rather than playing her part. Other Honorable Mentions: Rest of the cast.

iii – As for writing — Meesam, you made us all cry… is this how a play is written? After the play ended with huge round of applause, every guy was waiting in queue to congratulate Meesam by hugging him in similar manner as we do to a bridegroom. It was beautifully written with very emotional, heartening theme which ran throughout the play.

I remember, that there were two women who were sited next to me and kept crying throughout the play. Every few minutes, a new tissue wrapper was opened due to consistent tears running down their cheeks.

iv – Respected Zain Ahmed struck a gold in his direction. In his plays, we are able to witness high praise worthy performances and spend a wonderful time.

v – An effective sad song was sung by Zain Nazar. He has a very good voice.

vi – It takes a daring step to present these sensitive issues regarding sectarianism and religious intolerance, arranged marriages, dominating gender roles, and the rights of women especially of giving birth in Pakistan. These major issues have taken over the new generations as well.

+ Low Points
i – Basic story line / theme with hardly any set design.

+ Overall
Ikhtiar tells a personal story that never loses its touch with the vast Muslim Sect community which spaces in surrounding and defining it. It is truly an epic that breathes. And it’s a beauty.

Mr. Khan’s Review on Return to Palestine (2017)

A review on foreign comedy drama theatre play, Return to Palestine (2017). It was performed at NAPA’s International Theatre Festival 2017.

+ Crew

  • Directed by Micaela Miranda

+ Note
Return to Palestine is a Palestinian black comedy play, which was performed in English. At abroad, this play was originally performed in Arabic. It was devised together with the ensemble of graduated actors from The Freedom Theatre Acting School.

In a sarcastic, comic but also tragic style, the actors create the space, characters and even the emotional spaces they live in in a virtuoso play with their bodies in an a very small stage – “as small as Palestine”.

Return to Palestine gathers stories from Jenin, Fasayel, Dheisha Camp, Mufaqara and Gaza.

+ Full Cast

  1. Nabil Alraee
  2. Ihad Talahmeh
  3. Alaa Shehadah
  4. Ameer Abu Rob
  5. Motaz Malhees
  6. Raneen Odeh
  7. Shahd Samara
  8. Samer Abuantash

+ Plot
Jad, a Palestinian born in America, decides to go to Palestine for the first time in his life. Wanting to know more about his people and identity, he finds out that reality is very different from what you see in the news.

+ High Points
i – The play’s humor boosted the impact of the actors’ performances.

ii – The performances by the entire cast is splendidly executed. It kept everyone attention glued to the stage.

iii – The musical chores played via Arabic instruments helped the scenes’ shifting and lifted the play interest level.

iv – It shows that with even limited resources, how you can still present it thriving while having abundance of creativity. The creative way to show transportation, the journey in visiting different cities, the sound effects made by performers was very well put. The director’s creativity made me remind of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami.

v – The audience consisted mostly of Pakistani Muslims and already have a soft spot for Palestine and their play. Thus, the public were already warmly attached to it. The director did a fantastic job by taking this play through the shape of black comedy and ending it on a very emotional note. It touched the audience hearts in such a way that there was no doubt that they would end up by giving a standing ovation.

I could still remember the echoes of the audience applause. Truly well done!

+ Low Points
i – The story was very simple and basic.

ii – Since there were no set design, there were times where it was difficult to make out of their gestures.

+ Overall
Return to Palestine breathes new life into this kind of black comedy with inventive direction, influential performances, and an irresistible excess of heart.

+ High Points
i – Osman Khalid Butt performance as Balu was very appealing on-screen. He unquestionably raised eye brows of many people due to his naturalistic performance. As far as Ainy Jaffri is concerned, she attracted the majority of the audience to herself. Ainy Jafri as Mahi would blow you away with her charming performance. Other Honorable Mentions: Sadaf Kanwal, Durdana Butt, Shafqat Cheema and Javed Shaikh.

ii – The chemistry between the two lead stars was simply magical on big screen. The blazing chemistry between them would make the audience to ask for more. This is one of the key points for success of the film.

iii – The audience is in for a ride due to great ‘Visuals Treat’ with terrific lighting and foggy background that made us believe perhaps we live in a fantastical world. Lahore looked stunning to feast your eyes on.

iv – The art direction is mind blowing! We are able to see such etiquette art work, luxurious furniture with colorful backgrounds and scenery.

v – As for makeup & hair styling, they did an incredible job for adorable looks with their stars, especially Sadaf Kanwal and Ainy Jafri.

vi – Although, the songs are good to listen to but their dances were well choreographed comparable to Bollywood style.

vii – Sex based humor with representative meaning which are not vulgar for the family audience and can be enjoyed easily.

viii – The comic relief by respected Durdana Butt and Shafqat Cheema was well put.

ix – The costume design department did a superb job in representing desirable wardrobe for Sadaf Kanwal and Ainy Jaffri according to the theme of the film.

+ Low Points
i – The 1st half is basically Jab We Met (2007) Bollywood film while the 2nd half is Dil Bole Hadippa (2009) another Bollywood film. The film entire concept and story is heavily influenced by these two Bollywood films as mentioned above.

It is really sad to see that the writer has failed to come up with their original concept and story for this film. Even the characters written of Osman and Ainy are almost the same that of Shahid & Kareena from the film, Jab We Met.

ii – Balu Mahi shows that in a realistic world, we have several unrealistic and highly unlikely situations that the two lead actors face such as offered to do music dance video unexpectedly while trying to hide away from some people who are after them.

The lead characters already knew their dance steps to perform with group in the music video that very moment.

iii – Why do you need to do toilet humor in a film like this? Though, the gross-out humor does not take leverage to make the film an enjoyable one.

iv – Throughout the film, it is filled with clichés including the end.

v – It was a huge turn off to see such a beautiful actress in manly facial hair in second half of the film.

vi – People who were in extras, seemed to be concerned with their lives only as the viewers do not see any reactions from them when a young couple running away in panic / doing awkward activity / shouting in such a crowded area.

+ Overall
Balu Mahi has enough charm to mark a successful entry in Pakistani film industry for the times to come.
