Mr. Khan’s Review on ‘Takkabur’ (2015)

A review on Pakistani Drama Serial, ‘Takkabur’ (2015). The Production House is Six Sigma Plus while its Distributor is A Plus TV.

+ Crew

  • Directed by Ahsan Talish
  • Written by Shahzad Javed
  • Music by Waqar Ali

+ Note
Takkabur aired on A-Plus Entertainment from 23rd July 2015. It consists of total 26 episodes. Though it is not mentioned but this drama is for ‘Targeted Audience’ only.

Its executive producer is Sadia Jabbar and the Opening song ‘Kahe Ko Byaahe Bides’ is sung by Abida Hussain.

The drama serial focuses on the conflict between greed over love in the relationships. This drama serial’s concept is HEAVILY INFLUENCED by the classic film of Stanley Kubrick ‘Barry Lyndon’. Rather than having a MALE protagonist, we have a female. ‘Takkabur’ writers would be almost sure that ‘No one especially in Pakistan, people would have watched a film like ‘Barry Lyndon’ as that film is based in the times of Victorian era’.

+ Main Cast:

  1. Fatima Kunwar as Mehru
  2. Aly Khan as Kabeer
  3. Firdous Jamal as Hakeem Sahib
  4. Sajid Shah as Sabghat
  5. Shaheen Khan as Amma
  6. Humaira Zahid as Mubeena
  7. Hasan Farid Khan as Abdullah

xxxxxxx

+ Supportive Cast:

  1. Fazal Hussain as Maaro
  2. Kaif Ghaznavi as Farisa
  3. Maryam Ansari as Masooma
  4. Asim Mehmood as Zarak
  5. Salman Saeed as Asad
  6. Rahma Saleem as Sweety
  7. Zainab Qayuum as Shabana

+ Plot

A lower middle-class family of old parents, is suffering with heavy debts and fears that one day creditors would take away their shop too. Being in constant stress, Hakeem sb consistently rejects all the marriage proposals his daughter. One day a respectable, wealthy person sends a marriage proposal to Mehru.

+ High Points:

i – In one of the lead roles, we have fame Aly Khan. It was the only reason why I chose to watch ‘Takkabur’.

ii – I was surprised to see that some of the shots were taken in ‘High’ & ‘Low’ angles to indicate character’s power shift.

iii – The international famous film child star Fazal Hussain of Pakistani film ‘Ramchand Pakistani’ played the role of Maaro in this TV drama. I have seen his work before. Here, he did a good a job as a comic relief character.

iv – Aly Khan’s acting is good as expected. All of his scenes are interesting to watch.

v – Performances by Zainab Qayuum, Sajid Shah and Firdous Jamal were mild.

+ Low Points:

i – The first scene of the first episode, gave a clear message where am I getting myself into… (Ugh) ULTIMATE EDITION of ‘Rhona Dhona’ (Cry & then you Cry again), even though you do not want to but you have to cry. As you would see, almost all of the characters are always CRYING! Koyi apni maa k Marne pr bhi itna nahi rotha, jitna ye log royay hai (No one have cried so much even at their mother’s funeral as these people did). They earned PhDs in crying so much. This TV drama new title should be ‘Takkabur: Ronay Ka Buffet’.

ii – I could not find this actress name who played the role of ‘Hakeem Sb’s Wife / Mehru’s mom’. But I would like to inform all of you that this actress cried in all of the 26 EPISODES! No episode ended without a tear in her eyes. Her name should be in Guinness Book of World Records.

iii – Just as soon as a very ‘Tragic’ scene ends, suddenly the very next scene is where forceful comic performance starts with cartoon-ish score. Ji.

iv – If an actor is to show that he is greedy, he would literally mention a word ‘Meh’ (I) or ‘Faida’ (Benefit) to openly tell the viewers that this is exactly my intend rather than make the audience understand on their own to what the actor’s activity / manner of speaking is indicating them towards to.

v – There were many plot holes where the writers did not even bother to fill the gaps. Such as we are told that Farisa’s husband is working abroad but not even once he was showed contacting his wife / family or working abroad. Viewers never see his face. The same thing happens with Kaber and his three daughters. Only the eldest daughter ‘Sweety’ is shown but never ever do we viewers see the faces or presence of his other two daughters.

vi – The wardrobe of the actors were badly handled. Most of the cast members, we see in same style clothing at any time, at any place. For example, if Sabghat wears two piece suit. Then we would see him in two piece suit even at his home, at hospital, at friend’s house etc. If Kabeer wears shalwar kameez, then he would only be seen in it. Not once he wears something different. Some of the smaller stars wore same colored clothes in much later episodes as well. Naturally during shooting, they must have shot those later episodes scenes in one day so that they don’t have to call the actors again and again. But my dear ‘Takkabur’ BTS team. Don’t you know that people are not stupid? They would easily recognize your flaws especially if they are that simple.

vii – It is the typical thinking of some people belonging to lower class that if a person belongs to upper class, then they must be spending their time late at night clubs / go to disco parties and drink alcohol. You complain, what is my problem? My friend, this is not creative writing. This is your typical thinking which bought you here. If you want to be good writer, then start doing in-depth research. Any lay person can write this crap, to what you wrote. Be creative, bring innovative ideas to differ yourself from common writers.

viii – We have a draw here between Humaira Zahid & Firdous Jamal on who shouts the most and with more volume. Here in Pakistan, there are some production houses who literally believe that ‘The more you SHOUT, the BETTER an actor you would become’. It is embarrassing yet true how some of these ‘Professional’ people misguide these actors and young talent.

ix – As for sir Firdous Jamal, (with due respect) l honestly believe that he is a great actor and I do really enjoy watching his performances. But here it is NOT his fault; this is how his character was written and how director wanted him to perform. Even in the Pakistani film of Shoaib Mansoor ‘Bol’, we have Hakeem sahib who shouts at top of his lungs. — Tell me, what is this? Why do we usually have Hakeem characters shouting unnecessarily and are mean to their wife & daughters? In the ‘Bol’ film, the character is almost (not exact) identical in personality.

x – At first I thought Maaro is the son of Hakeem sb. But later I confirmed it (although he lived much better than Hakeem Sb’s actual son) is actually their house servant. If anyone take a good look at his clothes, his behavior, the way he talks… no one would had guessed him as house servant. Whenever he is shown, his clothes are so new and of good quality, as if always wearing his ‘Eid’ clothes. High Class servant working in lower middle-class family.

xi – Such a lamest way to have a car accident of Kabeer that at first I thought he is joking to scare Mehru off, however BTS team used this lame shot as real ‘Serious’ accident. Bummer!

xii – The script, editing, cinematography… just average. It’s not something special that I would discuss it.

xiii – As far as the drama’s title song is concerned, not good AT ALL! Definitely NOT recommended to listen to. It may INFECT your ears. So be cautious!

xiv – The decision on whether Mehru should or should not marry took ages to show; around 4 – 5 episodes at least. It’s not like she was proposed by a very old age, ‘Grand Pa’ type man or have ‘Bad’ personality where so much issue was created over it. Anyways, it’s not my cup of tea to watch these ‘unnecessary crying & shouting mode’ drama.

+ Overall

If you have nothing else to do and want to kill time, then perhaps you may want to watch Takkabur.

Mr. Khan’s Review on ‘Ainak Wala Jin’ (1993 – 96)

A review on Pakistani Comedy TV Series, ‘Ainak Wala Jin’ (1993 – 96) aka ‘Spectacled Genie’. It’s Production and Distribution is done by PTV (Lahore).

+ Crew

  • Directed by Hafeez Tahir
  • Written by Abdul Hameed

+ Note
Ainak Wala Jin aired on PTV from 1993 –1996. In total it consists of 151 episodes (1 – 4 Seasons). The theme was conceived as a merger of fantasy, real life and science fiction. This drama was re-broadcast two times on television in Pakistan due to public demand. It was widely popular among children for its humor and fictional story line.

The main cast had been invited by many educational institutions and dignitaries like the Governor of Punjab, Pakistan to request for a live performance for them. Even Imran Khan, the legendary cricketer / politician invited them for fund raising of his hospital where the Princess Diana (late) had watched them perform.

Though, it is really sad to know that most of cast members have lived and died under the poor conditions such as Najma (Karnani Churail), Nusrat Ara (Bil Batori) & Munna Lahori.

+ Plot

A genie comes to the earth for his poor visionary treatment. He lands in the Lahore where he meets a young boy who loves fantasies and takes him to a doctor to get him some glasses.

+ High Points

i – The characters were written in such a way to make iconic mainly due to having different attributes, characteristics, and their signature punchlines. Hence, many made themselves quite memorable for their viewers and fans alike.

ii – The makeup & hair styling were unique nonetheless at times even bizarre for applying on different multiple characters. However, it worked well mainly because they belong to a super natural world / nature.

iii – In the start there was a serious concern of having a good budget, to come up with realistic visual effects. So the team had the next best option is to start using camera tricks, special effects in order to show character / objects appearing / disappearing acts in convincing method. At that time, these effects turn out to be very useful and looked somewhat real. However, it is much later on that they started using visual effects but by now there was really no need of it as the special effects did the job really well, made the viewers satisfied to what they were shown on-screen.

iv – The best performances of the two characters I liked the most were of Haseeb Pasha as Hamoon Jadoogar and Munna Lahori as Zakoota Jin. Not only their characters were very well written but also the fact that they performed very well. I waited for them to make their appearances on-screen. Other Honorable Mentions: Nusrat Ara, Shehzad Qaiser, Nisar Butt, Ajlal Asim Bukhari, Moattar Asim Bukhari and Asad Bhandara.

v – The punch lines were of the most interesting points of this series. Not only they were very comic and amusing but also many different characters had their signature lines to be remembered by. Some of which are as below:

  • Zakoota Jin: “Mujhe kaam batao, mein kya karoun, mein kis ko khaun”?

  • Hamoon Jadugar: “Jubi mera naam Hamoon Jadugar hai koyi Patloon Jadugar nahi” or

  • “Jubi meh kehta hu k tu churial nahi daayan hai, meri behen hai. Aaniya Shuaniya…” or

  • “Bil Batori, batha chori, khalay kahori, Meh hu Hamoon, Tu hai Dayaan, aaja, aaja, come on, come on…”

  • Ankhari Jadugarni: “Andhari raat, Na tara aur na chand, khadm bara, khadm bara, khadm bara…”!

vi – I believe that the direction is satisfactory. Though, working with so many performers for such a long TV series … this was certainly not an easy job to pull off.

vii – Costumes designing of different characters have been rightly suitable to their character’s traits and appearances.

viii – Good editing helps a lot in covering up performance errors, wrong prop placement etc; plus it boasted up the special effects department in making it more interesting and watchable.

ix – The production design may not be perfect but it was above average in almost mid-90s, when this TV series came into being.

x – The overall performances by the entire cast are actually good and at times hilarious even.

xi – Educational messages started to appear in the further episodes for children which is very thoughtful and helpful for their audience rather than just to make for entertainment.

xii – The songs, dances helped to grab more target audience that is children, young adults such as families drawing towards it too.

+ Low Points

i – I can understand, the intense public demand they must be facing to make more episodes than a usual Pakistani TV series has but still, the total number of episodes were way too many. I mean, to have total 151 episodes are a lot! More than what you wish for. The problems Ainak Wala Jin had to face were mainly of proper story continuation. It was just like cartoons, where many times same issues, troubles kept repeating on and on but with no proper outcome to it. Such as the locket of Nastoor that needs to be stolen. To do this, many, many episodes were produced. Similarly, many times Charlie Mamu gets possessed or controlled by Aliens (yes, aliens) where the viewers were forced to watch same repeated problems. It clearly shows how the team was ‘Forced’ to produce.

ii – Most of the times, there was hardly any logic shown in this TV series. The starting episodes strongly indicated that this world is actually a Buffoonish one where weird or unrealistic things doesn’t matters to anyone that much. For example: Imran’s father car starts to fly on top of busy city and the reactions of these main characters were as if ‘Oh, so we are flying? Great’. Or the time when Imran strictly tells Nastoor that he would rather die but would never cheat. And the next thing you know is that Nastoor helps Imran in every game he plays so that he wins every time.

There are some comic Hollywood films who match this kind of world such as ‘The Mask’ (1994), ‘The Road to Morocco’ (1942) and many more.

iii – There were so many sub plots, characters from the mid of the episodes that I lost track and interest from it. The only thing concerned me after losing interest is that just to watch and see what is happening in each episode than to follow the story.

iv – Since there are so many characters that played in this TV series which also has disadvantage of remembering them all but mostly only few who were most interesting ones.

v – They took the finale episode almost too serious. I don’t agree with the writer’s view on the tragic end but it’s possible that the BTS team didn’t wanted to make any more further episodes than they already have and wanted to convince the audience, why they can’t make it any further.

+ Overall
Ainak Wala Jin manages to entertain audience with many of its interesting characters and good humor, but still falls short in terms of good story line and by producing unnecessary numerous episodes.

+ Main Cast

  1. Samiya Mumtaz as Sajida Bibi / Sajjo / Tahira
  2. Bushra Ansari as Rasheeda Bibi / Sheedan
  3. Ahsan Khan as Imtiaz Ali Sheikh
  4. Urwa Hocane as Meera Majid
  5. Farhan Saeed as Taimoor Arshad / Arsh (Lawyer #1)
  6. Hina Altaf Khan as Zeb-un-Nisa Parveiz / Zebo (Teen)

xxxxxxx

+ Supportive Cast

  1. Haris Waheed as Ilyas
  2. Behroze Sabzwari as Khalid
  3. Arjumand Hussain as Arsh’s father
  4. Saife Hassan as Malik Iftikhar Hussain
  5. Akbar Islam as Rana (Lawyer #2)
  6. Areesha Ahsan as Zebo alias Komal (Child)

+ Plot

Two friends, Sheedan & Sajida lead a very different path of struggle. Sheedan is heavily criticized for her local music career in the village, although she is the only source of hard earned income for her family. On the other hand, Sajida & her younger daughter, Zebo struggle badly to get rid of Imtiaz and seek for justice.

+ High Points
i – The negative role of Ahsan Khan has truly captured people hearts with his terrifying, haunting antagonist performance as child sexual abuser. His role as Imtiaz in this hit TV drama serial ‘Udaari’ would always be remembered in his bright future career.

ii – Evergreen beloved TV super star, Bushra Ansari as Sheedan performed very well on-screen. At her age, most performed usually lose their shining ability on-screen but not respected Bushra Ansari. She has proved us all how well performer she is no matter how difficult the role is given to her to perform. I was very pleased to see her in the role of Sheedan where her untimely comic punch lines made the viewers’ laugh very badly.

iii – The supporting cast performances were nicely played. Honorable Mentions are: Areesha Ahsan, Samiya Mumtaz, Arjumand Hussain, Hina Altaf Khan, Urwa Hocane and Saad.

iv – I am glad that this content was finally made into TV drama serial to reach its mass audience which not only shows the struggle that the victim, the family has to face but how they can avail justice through trials, lawyers, what concrete evidence they would need to punish the culprit and most importantly how the victim has struggle with his/her life after the sexual assault.

v – The characters of Ahsan Khan and Bushra Ansari were very well written with worthy punch lines. The incredible performances by these two stars have further accelerated these two characters as most memorable characters shown on-screen.

vi – Although last few episodes were based on trial and court room but it was intentionally showed as just to make aware to the justice dept. that who is the culprit is and what sinful acts he has done to the victim is not enough. No. You see, one would need concrete, hard evidences to fight for justice and prove your allegations in the court room.

+ Low Points
i – When such a shocking content is placed as your main plot then it is vital and a clever move to choose those good performers who are unknown to the media world. This way you can make your fictional world as realistic as possible for the mass viewers. Too many well-known celebrities, in such key roles deteriorate the convincing scenario for the viewers. Their concern would be focused more on the TV drama that they watched rather than a lifelike situation they viewed to.

ii – The main content and the strong performances are the real reasons that pulled the viewers’ towards this TV drama than the story did the job.

iii – Meera’s refusal to marriage continues even though Taimoor’s parents agree to accept her as their daughter-in-law. But in the end, Meera suddenly agrees the (expired) proposal as ‘All Is Well That Ends Well’?

iv – Rather than the drama is based on ground realities, it was too much commercialized in the favor of more star power.

v – I believe four or five episodes were based on trials and court room scenario; it reduced the intensity and interest level to watch the TV drama serial.

+ Overall
Extensive and shallow, Udaari nevertheless succeeds on the strength of its competent technique and solid performances.

Mr. Khan’s Review on ‘Waada’ (2017)

A review on Pakistani TV Drama Serial ‘Waada’ (2017), aka [Promise]. The Production House is Big Bang Entertainment.

III. Produced by Fahad Mustafa and Dr. Ali Kazmi
IV. Title Song by Falak Shabir

+ Note
The drama serial ‘Waada’ aired on ARY Digital from 8th Nov 2016 – 12th Apr 2017. It consists of total 23 episodes.

+ Main Cast

  1. Faisal Qureshi as Shahab
  2. Shaista Lodhi as Sumaira
  3. Saboor Ali as Jaana
  4. Ghazala Butt as Jaana’s Mom

xxxxxxx

+ Supportive Cast

  1. Hassan Ahmed as Arif
  2. Amir Qureshi as Uzair
  3. Anam Tanveer as Nuzhat
  4. Srha Asghar as Uzma

+ Plot

Jaana is the new maid (former maid’s daughter) who wins most of the household member’s hearts and gains their trust. Unknown to others, Jaana hunts for her next victim to fulfill her life with her unlimited wishes and turns to Shahab, married man (with a young daughter) and only son of this wealthy family. Nothing remains the same when she is able to marry him secretly.

+ High Points
i – Ghazala Butt performance was best and most convincingly of the lot in as the antagonist’s supportive role. She performed her role very smoothly and easily. Other Honorable Mentions: Rest of the cast.

ii – All performances were respectable mainly due to having a good director.

iii – Effective writing skills which made this drama intriguing, out of a simple story.

iv – Great direction made this TV drama series even more exciting to watch.

v – Although viewers wanted to see the outcome of Jaana’s mother as well plus more than a decade is really long time to forgive. Still I believe it was generally a satisfying finale.
vi – The title song by Falak Shabir was very pleasant song to listen.

+ Low Points

i – Shaista Lodhi clearly looked elder to Faisal Qureshi.

ii – Artificial lighting is used to leverage or to show the day / moon light in a video. Unfortunately, here the yellow gel lighting did not convinced viewers of being the ‘Real’ daylight.

iii – Though Ms. Noshaba Javed as Khala performed really well and her character was written as one of the most interesting ones but her getup / makeup made her face seemed as if someone had beat her up very badly and was disturbing. Similarly Shaista Lodhi’s poor makeover i.e. of having extra thick eyebrows and her terrible liposuction made her repulsive to look at.

iv – Subplots were either given no importance or were uninteresting to watch.

+ Overall
With likable leads and worthy direction, Waada offers a detail perspective on different social class themes, self-centered needs and betrayal with inevitable dreadful outcome.

Each episode opens with the Professor delivering, or trying to deliver, a new lecture on the art of acting. The overly zealous, wanna-be superstars are just too keen to follow what the teacher is trying to teach them. So, they make a mess of his efforts, through their ‘innovative approach’ towards performing arts, or learning the same.

As if the class is not just enough to make the professor’s life miserable, the principal cannot help making some advances every now and then with him. In resisting her, the Professor is always on the defensive.

This sitcom is inspired by Zabaan Sambhalke (1993 – 1996) which is an Indian sitcom and was also inspired by another Indian sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993 – 1994). However all these sitcoms where inspired by the original source, a British sitcom; Mind Your Language (1977). Even a Malaysian version sitcom has released as Oh My English (2012).

And then there is ‘Madam Mona’, the principal of this ‘Esteemed’ institution with a crush on the Professor who does his level best in avoiding her.

+ High Points

i – …nothing comes to my mind.

+ Low Points

i – Many different characters with many different personalities but hardly anyone memorable.

ii – Some random jokes may turn out to be good enough for you to response with just a smile. However, many of those humorous punchlines are second-rate.

iii – The class room looks clearly like artificial back-set instead of real deal.

iv – Failed to capture audience attention towards this TV series.

+ Overall
Aadha Kaar tries hard to make funny, watchable TV series but falls flat on its face.

Mr. Khan’s Review on ‘Guest House’ (1991)

A review on Pakistani Classic TV Drama Series ‘Guest House’ (1991). Its Production House and Distributor is PTV Network.

+ Crew

  1. Directed by Rauf Khalid
  2. Written by Qaiser Farooq, Muhammad Nisar & Shakir Uzair

+ Note

Guest House aired on PTV Network on 1991. In total it consists of 52 episodes. What most people might not know is that this fame TV series is actually inspired by the classic British sitcom ‘The Fawlty Towers’ (1975 – 79). They also had 4 – 5 recurring characters including Mr. & Mrs. being the owners of their guest house. On the other hand, Guest House was such a super hit series in Pakistan that people wrote letters to PTV never to finish it. It was famous among children as ‘Rambo Wala Drama’ which means the drama featuring Rambo.

Afzal Khan aka Afzal Rambo Khan is said to have a striking resemblance with the legendary Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone. It is said that the producers were not too happy to have his character on board and wanted to cut him off after the pilot. But Afzal Khan’s comical performance made his character as the most interesting one to watch. In 2016 interview, Afzal Khan said how he had to hid himself from the public eye as he was very popular among the masses. He actually had to disguise himself whenever he went in the public, not able to recognize him. After this classic TV drama, he quickly become a super star in Lollywood industry. But even after so many hit films and other TV series, he is still known and loved because of his biggest fame in ‘Guest House’ as John Rambo.

As for the director, Rauf Khalid was the founding President and Chancellor of the National Institute of Cultural Studies, Lok Virsa; Islamabad.  In 1991, he wrote Guest House, a comedy series that turned out to be very popular for PTV. In 1995, Rauf Khalid directed, produced and acted in few drama serials such as Angaar Wadi, Laag and Maddar.  In 2003, Rauf Khalid released his debut film Laaj, as (writer, director, producer and actor). His film won 12 Bolan Awards, 14 Graduate Awards, 4 National Film Awards and Lux Style Award.

It is very unfortunate to know that the prominent writer, actor & director Rauf Khalid could not live long due to his car’s tire burst at a high-speed car accident heading to Sheikhpura in Nov, 2011.

+ Main Cast

  1. Khalid Hafeez as Mr. Shameem
  2. Sarwat Ateeque as Mrs. Shameem
  3. Nasir Iqbal as Bao Naveed
  4. Tariq Malik as Murad
  5. Afzal Khan as John Rambo

+ Special Guest Appearances

  • Ghazala Butt
  • Bushra Ansari
  • Laila Zuberi

+ Plot

A guest house named as ‘Guest House’ is located in a posh area of Islamabad. It is run by Mr. Shameem and his wife with the help of three permanent regular employees, Naveed, Murad and Rambo.

+ High Points

i – The recurring characters were remarkably written as it was very pleasant to watch their comic behavior. Such as:

  • Shameem is the owner of the Guest House and always ready to please his guests even if it means to meet their shocking demands. He is married to Mrs. Shameem who he dearly loves but has a habit to flirt with young, beautiful females who are staying as his guests. Unlike his employees, he does not like to get involved in his guests’ private issues.
  • Mrs. Shameem would mostly catch her husband off-guard and would make a living hell for him and his new love interest. She loves shopping but complains to her husband for being a miser. She is soft on the employees, often takes their side, and tries to stop her husband from punishing them. She hates being called ‘Aunty’ and says to call her only ‘Mrs. Shameem’.
  • As for John Rambo the janitor, he hates when someone offers him ‘Tip’ as he considers this as being offended. He likes to work hard and bring good name to the Guest House, where he is employed. He can be easily convinced to do what is morally right. He often gets involved with other people personal issues and tries his best to gets them solved.
  • Then we have Murad who is a ‘Bellboy’ and would look for tips by the guests. He would break things up accidentally and had to pay from his salary.
  • Lastly, we have Naveed is the receptionist and is the only character who is mature and makes the right decision in order to run the Guest House.

ii – One of the most lovable and fun-filled performance to watch was of Afzal Khan as John Rambo. This was first TV series after leaping from theater acting career. He had no idea that his debut performance in TV series would give a permanent name in his own as other alias. Even today he is still well known and loved due to this character of John Rambo that he played in this classic TV series ‘Guest House’. His characteristics as to his well-intention mishaps and involvement into the personal lives of the guests would put him in trouble.

iii – Tariq Malik as Murad has made many people laugh and enjoy with his great timing comical facial expressions and remarks. His on & off fights with John Rambo in most of the episodes was always a great watch to enjoy. Though never seen Tariq Malik in other project after this but this iconic character has surely made everyone to remember him great respect. Other Honorable Mentions: Khalid Hafeez and Sarwat Ateeque.

iv – This is the only direction of Rauf Khalid, that I watched and reviewed on. Although he has been a director for few more TV series and a couple of films at least. A good director would make sure how smoothly everything goes and is responsible for having bigger credit for overall good performance by the cast members. For classic TV series, Rauf Khalid is a name to remember with great respect.

v – Its writing, screenplay has been very strong, to give an effective combination with the performances. The three writers had made sure that their TV series would be cherished with good memories for times to come.

vi – There are several famous quotes spoken by these iconic characters. Some of them are:

  • My Name is Rambo, Rambo, John Rambo, Silver Stallone, the Cockroach Killer” – John Rambo.
  • Yeh Aunty Kis Ko Kaha? Meh Kya Tumari Aunty Hu?” – Mrs. Shameem.
  • TIP, TIP Karta Meh Kamray Mein Aatha Hu” – Murad.
  • Easy Feel” – Murad.
  • After Kar” – John Rambo.

vii – Since every episode had a new story to tell, this way we had new characters to watch and know their side of the story while the Guest House’s recurring characters would most often engage themselves in their private matters to solve it.

viii – Everyone in the cast gave a very, satisfying good performance as their characters demanded it to be.

ix – On choosing your favorite episodes, there might be vast variance. For myself, I loved two episodes very much. The one where Bushra Ansari is in and the other one involves local wrestlers are invited to stay at their guest house.

x – Costume designing for the iconic characters were the interesting ones. Such as John Rambo is given wiper, which he carries with him as if it is a rifle. He wears black sleeveless t-shirt with goofy type of skulls printed on the centre. He wears light orange loose pajamas similar to the pants worn by Pakistani police. He ties a long red cloth around his head with has a butterfly tattoo on each arm along wearing long black boots. Murad is wearing typical professional uniform for a bellboy.

xi – In Makeup & Hair-styling, they made sure that Afzal Khan looked like a low-class janitor and made his skin complexion dark, as to be find normally in our demographic areas. There were scenes of imagination where Afzal Khan finds himself in formal suit as some high-class gentlemen or perhaps the owner of this guest house. There we see his true self, what he actually looks in real life. As for others, there were a number of different guests arrived in each episode. The makeup and hair styling that is applied on them is praise worthy.

+ Low Points

i – The finale is something that you would like to avoid watching it. Just because it’s the last episode, the writers made sure that no one after this will ask us for another episode or for a remake. Yes, it’s that bad. Instead of making a memorable finale and enjoyable end – they went for a kill shot! By having no comedy but only soberness.

ii – The Production Design was very basic. It didn’t look like a good guest house decorum. For sure, if this was a real guest house, I would have taken it as being run by totally non-professionals.

+ Overall
With iconic characters, comical performances, and interesting repeated quotes, Guest House is truly a wonderful classic TV series which has done right in every aspect of its writing and directorial departments.

+ High Points

i – Aijaz Aslam’s character however had an interesting meat to it as the actor usually plays positive roles. Thus, it was good to see him doing something different for a change. But it is unfortunate to see that his character doesn’t goes far.

ii – Stars such as Nauman Eijaz, Aijaz Aslam, Mohammad Ahmed, Agha Shiraz, Sami Sani was a warm welcome to be part of this TV series.

+ Low Points

i – Who was the brains to cast Shaista Lodhi in one of the lead stars? The casting director didn’t look far enough to have a much better actress in both categories (looks and performance). As for Shaista, she has a big brand name in the market and I guess that was enough for BTS team of Khan to approve her. Her performance at best to say, was okay but seriously, give serious thought to it and do admit that there is a long list of very good actresses in the market who could have been in her place.

ii – I am sorry to say but I had such big expectations from this drama. The name itself would attract anyone towards it. All the hype which was created for it, has fallen flat on the face.

iii – The story was very dry. It might look good on the paper but once it was on-air… Viola! The sub plots were there only to fill the gaps. As for the main plot, it was no fun to watch either.

iv – Too many well-known, star power was added to the list of cast members. The more commercial faces you have, the less feel of realism it would give.

v – Honestly, I lost interest in the third episode. After that, it never regains. I was hoping it would but didn’t. Still had to watch till the last (30th episode) to write its review.

vi – The cinematography is absolute pathetic! I can understand why TV industry usually calls them cameraman instead of ‘DOP’ or ‘Cinematographer’. There are so many scenes throughout this drama series where you would be laughing and wonder to what was going through their cameraman’s head to come up with such angles of scenes? For instance, there is a scene where Neelum has her ear phones on and is chatting with someone on her phone. And the camera angle is kept directly on her face, where she is clearly breaking the fourth wall to show as if she is talking directly to the viewers instead. I mean, are there no one in their BTS team to point out such a huge technical flaw?? How did director or the producer gave approval on such illogical technical shots? Did you guys spend all the budget on casting big names for your TV series than to give heed on hiring professionals to do their job correctly and praise worthy?

vii – As for makeup & hair-styling is concerned, I don’t understand why Shaista had so much surgery on her face for, with the extra powder on it … her face looked like a chalk!

viii – A very average performance by the main cast but it still disappointing to say this but they could have acted much better with the kind of roles that they had.

ix – When I have grown really tired to see Atiqa Odho in her similar characters that she is playing for a long, long time. I mean, come on! Doesn’t she have better and different type of roles to do? Same thing also goes for Nauman Eijaz. You pick any TV drama of his and most of them would have a very similar type of character that he plays. Our TV industry doesn’t let our stars to grow as a mature performer. They would rather restrict them to do ‘One of a Kind of Character’ all their lives.

x – I saw the director’s name, I was very pleased and excited to see what can he do for Khan. I was really looking forward to it. — what could he have done, when the entire project was falling apart?

xi – The quality of production design was there just for namesake. The BTS team of Khan had interest to make 30 episodes length of TV series. They clearly forgot that these secondary departments do matter to give a proper presentable to the viewers.

xii – There was no suspense in this series, everything turned out to be very predictable. Everything… including how it would end.

+ Overall
Khan fails to live up to the viewers’ expectations by their own set of numerous flaws.
